Farmland Legacies was founded in 1996 under the name Genesis Land Conservancy by three Saskatchewan Catholic religious communities.
The founders recognized several challenges emerging within agriculture:
• Rising debt and declining farm incomes
• Increasing barriers for young farmers entering agriculture
• Growing concentration of land ownership
• Environmental concerns related to agricultural sustainability
They believed there was another path – one where farmland could remain productive while serving broader community purposes. That vision remains at the heart of our work today.
Farmland Legacies continues to be a faith-based organization grounded in the belief that all land is a gift from the Creator and that stewardship of land and care for neighbour are deeply connected. Our sustaining members include:
• Roman Catholic Dioceses of Saskatchewan
• Anglican Dioceses of Saskatchewan
• Mennonite Central Committee Saskatchewan
• Living Skies Regional Council of the United Church of Canada
While our programs serve all people regardless of faith background, our work is inspired by a shared commitment to responsible stewardship, social justice, and care for creation. For us, caring for land is a practical expression of our faith.
